Adrean 5
July
3, 2001 - Vestal High School - Adrean Post went down
in defeat to Schrub Oak Legion Post 1080 from Long Island
by a score of 6-5, in a game played at Vestal High School
in The World Youth Classic.
Plagued
by crutial errors and mental lapses, Adrean had squandered
an outstanding pitching performance by Josh White after
he had settled down from a rough 1st inning. For Schrub
Oak, White walked leadoff hitter Nick Gallipani. Gallipani
was throw out on an attempted steal by Chris Darling to
clear the bases.
White
then walked the second batter Eric Williams. Frank Kessler
then stroked a base hit to put men on 1st and 3rd. An
error on the next pitch by John Autrey, sent Schrub Oaks
first run of the day home.
Schrub
Oak sent 9 batters to the plate and scored 1 run on 1
hit on 1 error and they left 3 men on base. On the other
side of the inning, Adrean was stymied by an outstanding
pitching performance by Chris Kearney. Kearney held Adrean
to 3 hits through 4 innings and always shutting down the
middle of the order when necessary.
In
the 3rd Schrub oak again took advantage of poor Adrean
defense to tack on two more runs. Eric Williams lwad off
with a base hit. Frank Kessler then hit a routine ground
ball to shortstop John Autrey who committed his 2nd error
to leave men on 1st and 2nd with no outs. After getting
Dan stephens to pop up to short, Schrub managed to push
2 runs across on a wild series of plays starting with
a would pitch scoring Williams and a late throw to the
plate by Andy Wengert as the th\e trailing runner from
2nd scored on a heads up base running effort by Frank
Kessler.
After
retiring the side Adrean scored their 1st run of the game
in the 4th when Matt Devins walked advanced on a fielders
choice and scored on Sal LiCaris double in the gap. White
retired Schrub Oak in the 5th and Adrean scored their
2nd run in the 5th when Bill Demma lead off with a double
followed by Nick Galliulo bloop single . With Galliulo
on first and no out a soft fly ball to right center field
looked like it may fall was caught by the right fielder
and turned into a double play getting Galiulo at first.
In the meantime White is pitching a 3 hitter through 6
and keeping Adrean well within striking distance until
the top of the 7th.
In
the top half of the 7th Schrub Oak lead off with Eric
Williams getting a walk followed by White striking out
Frank Kessler. Dan Stephens the hits a double to score
Williams. Eric Mittlestadt then singled to score Stephens
and Tom Capalbo doubled to put men on 2nd and 3rd.. Then
in possibly tthe most bizzar event of the tournament,
White, instructed to intentionally walk the batter, threw
the first pitch for a strike.
After
a time out and a conference on the mound, catcher Chris
Darling set up for the intentional walk and White threw
the ball over the plate for a base hit by Sam Goluboy
for Schrub Oaks final run.
In
the bottom of the 7th Adrean lead off with Kev McCormick
striking out followed by a walk to Chris Parkinson. Bill
Demma then singled and Nick Galiulo walked to load the
bases. Chris Darling then singled to drive in 2 runs.
Matt Devins then took a call 3rd strike for the 2nd out.
Andy wengert walked as did Sal LiCari to load the bases.
With 2 out and the bases full Kearney then got AJ Oblak
to swing a a first pitch ball over his head to pop up
weakly to right field to end the game.
